Big Scrub Rainforest Day Celebrations to Return this November for 25th Year

Annual celebration marks quarter of a century with walks, talks and workshops across 4 days.

Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy has announced the program and dates for its annual Big Scrub Rainforest Day Celebrations, with over 15 events across 10 Big Scrub locations scheduled for November 23rd - 26th.

The 25th instalment of the event will feature Science in the Pub at the Eltham Hotel, a multi-school community planting day, seed propagation workshops and guided walks in Lismore Botanic Gardens, Bodhi Tree Forest Monastery, Dorrobbee Grass Reserve, Booyong Nature Reserve, Victoria Park Nature Reserve, Bangalow Parklands and Cape Byron Distillery.

Prominent names taking part in this year’s events include the ABC’s Mick O’Regan, Dr Kevin Glencross (Southern Cross University Forest Research Centre), Delta Kay (Arakwal-Bundjalung woman), Jagun Alliance Aboriginal Corporation, Angie Brace (Friends of the Koala), Dr Rob Kooyman (leading rainforest ecologist), Mark Dunphy (Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy, Firewheel Rainforest Nursery) and Rhonda James (Friends of the Koala, Bushland Restoration Services).

Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy’s President, Dr Tony Parkes, said:

This year is a special year for our event, marking a quarter of a century of bringing the community together to celebrate the work done to save the Big Scrub and its magnificent biodiversity.

For this milestone event, we’re celebrating the science behind saving threatened species, investigating the conservation dilemma of planting eucalypts in the Big Scrub footprint and engaging the next generation with a huge multi-school community planting.

We have over 15 events at 10 different Big Scrub locations, with a mix of free and paid sessions, to engage the community in fun and meaningful connection with the rainforest.

30th Anniversary

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy’s formation. During this time we have cared for over 50 Big Scrub remnants as well as facilitated the planting of over 2.5 million trees to create 600 hectares of new rainforest, doubling the remaining area of the Big Scrub.

Big Scrub Rainforest Day Celebrations 2023 is presented in association with Rous County Council and our sponsors the NSW Government, Rainforest Rescue, Stone & Wood, Envite Environment, Brookfarm, Cape Byron Distillery, Firewheel Rainforest Nursery and our sister organisation, the Big Scrub Foundation.

Registrations are essential to attend and, with limited numbers for many of the events, we recommend registering early through www.bigscrubrainorest.org.
