What's On: Music in the Meadow
Barry Singh who was both the founder and conductor of the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra is embarking on an exciting new project called Music in the Meadow. The idea of having a concert on a beautiful grassy field in a small village on a relaxing Autumn afternoon was born from the fact that COVID is no longer holding the community in its grip.
So much of life's enjoyment was curtailed during COVID and cultural events, which are so enriching to the soul, came to a stand still. With this in mind, Barry has formed a new group called the Caldera Chamber Ensemble. This small group of 15 string players and harp will perform a variety of very familiar pieces which will both delight and subdue any angst that may have been accrued over the last three years.
To add to the pleasure and pure escapism of the day, patrons are asked to come to the concert in 1800s attire! This is not mandatory, but it will certainly add to the flavour of the day. If you have ever wondered what life would have been like as a character in a Jane Austen novel then this is your opportunity.
As this is an open air concert, attendees are asked to bring rugs, chairs and tables to the performance and, of course, a picnic basket full of delicious food and drink. Perhaps some French Champagne, Dom Perignon or other beverages that would be suitable for the event. You could even share a glass with the conductor? Teetotallers do not have to fear, as tea and cake were also a major part of the era.
Getting to the concert will also not pose a problem for anyone as the terrain is flat and there is plenty of off road parking on the fields. Keeping in mind our older and infirm ones a section will be cordoned off closest to the stage for them. It will be just a little walk over the newly constructed bridge.
Please note that If the weather is inclement on the day the concert will still go ahead and the performance will be moved to the Stokers Siding Memorial Hall. Stoker's Siding is a quaint little village about 10 kilometres south of Murwillumbah. Not too dissimilar to its English counterparts.
The program will include the beautiful Harp concerto by Handel, the Air from the Water Music, Meditation from Thais, Mozart Divertimento for Strings, Intermezzo from Cavaleria Rusicana by Mascagni, Chanson du Matin by Elgar, and much more. The program has been designed to match the peaceful surroundings.
