What drew you to aerial photography, and how has it changed your perspective on capturing landscapes?
Aerial photography offers a unique vantage point that fundamentally alters how I perceive and capture landscapes. My interest in aerial photography was sparked by the desire to see the world from a perspective that is not often seen by the human eye. The ability to view and photograph landscapes from above unveils patterns, textures, and relationships between elements that are often hidden from a ground perspective. One of the most captivating aspects of aerial photography is its capacity to reveal the intricate details of natural environments in ways that ground-level photography cannot. From this elevated viewpoint, the complex interplay of landforms, colours, and shapes becomes more apparent, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the environment's beauty and complexity. Additionally, aerial photography has shifted my approach to capturing landscapes. It encourages a broader, more comprehensive view, emphasising the interconnections of elements within the frame. The scale and perspective offered from above often highlight patterns and compositions that might otherwise go unnoticed, leading to more evocative imagery. Overall, aerial photography has expanded my creative vision and heightened my awareness of the intricate details and broader patterns within landscapes, offering a fresh way to portray landscapes.
Byron Bay is known for its stunning coastal landscapes. Can you share a memorable experience or favourite location you've photographed in this region?
On a stormy afternoon in early January this year, I ventured to Tallow Beach. The unpleasant weather conditions with gusts of wind up to 50km/h helped provide a composition without beachgoers, while the swell rolling onto the beach and crashing into the rocks allowed me to capture amazing detail in the whitewash. The image depicts the gentle warmth of the late afternoon sun lightly touching the lush native growth on Cape Byron, while the dark storm that is approaching evokes a very different emotion. This stark contrast brings together a visually exciting, yet calming image for the viewer.
Your work highlights the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation. How do you incorporate these themes into your photography, and what message do you hope to convey to your audience?
Incorporating themes of sustainability and environmental conservation into my photography is both a personal passion and a professional commitment. I choose to photograph landscapes and ecosystems that are at risk or have been significantly altered by human activities. By capturing the beauty and vulnerability of these subjects, I aim to draw attention to the urgent need for preservation. Each photo is composed to tell a story about the environment, highlighting both its splendour and the challenges it faces. Using my platform to educate and inspire through exhibitions, social media, and publications, I share not just the images but also the context behind them, including information about environmental issues and actionable steps people can take to make a difference. The message I hope to convey through my photography is one of both beauty and responsibility. By showcasing the natural world in its diverse forms, I aim to foster a sense of connection and appreciation. At the same time, I want to emphasise that this beauty is fragile and that each of us has a role to play in protecting and preserving our environment.
What challenges do you face when trying to capture the essence of untouched natural landscapes, and how do you overcome them?
Capturing the essence of untouched natural landscapes presents several unique challenges, each requiring thoughtful strategies to overcome. Untouched landscapes are often remote and difficult to access. To overcome this, careful planning and preparation are essential. This includes detailed research on the location, weather conditions, and potential logistical hurdles. Collaborating with locals who are familiar with the area can be invaluable. Ensuring that my presence does not disturb the natural environment is a priority, by minimising my footprint and avoiding any actions that could harm the ecosystem. Natural landscapes can be subject to rapidly changing weather conditions, which can affect both the timing and quality of shots. To overcome this, I remain flexible with my shooting schedule and am prepared to adapt quickly to changing conditions. I also plan shoots around optimal light times, such as golden hours, to enhance the visual impact of the landscape. Conveying the true essence of a landscape requires more than just a beautiful image. It involves capturing the unique qualities and atmosphere of the location. To achieve this, I spend time immersing myself in the environment, understanding its characteristics, and waiting for moments that authentically represent its nature. Patience and a connection to the location are key to translating its essence into a photograph.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers who are passionate about capturing natural beauty and want to make a meaningful impact through their work?
Providing advice for aspiring photographers passionate about capturing the beauty of the natural environment and making a meaningful impact, there are some key practices that I remain true to. Before I start photographing, I invest time in learning about the environments and ecosystems that I wish to capture. Understanding the ecological significance and the challenges facing these areas help portray more impactful and informed stories through imagery. Understanding the technical aspects of photography, including composition, lighting, and post-processing is key. Technical proficiency will enable you to capture high-quality images that do justice to the natural beauty you’re trying to convey. Experiment with different techniques and equipment to find what works best for your vision. Always follow ethical guidelines to minimise your impact on the environment. This includes respecting wildlife and avoiding disturbance to habitats. Leverage your work to raise awareness about environmental issues. Share the stories behind your images through social media, exhibitions, or publications, and provide context about the conservation challenges and solutions. Your platform can educate and inspire others to take action. Nature photography often requires patience and perseverance. Conditions may not always be ideal, and are certainly never consistent.
