Design for Barefoot Luxury Boutique Byron Hotel Revealed

International architecture practice Plus Architecture have unveiled designs for a new luxury destination hotel in the heart of Byron Bay, delivering a first-of-its-kind premium accommodation experience to the sought-after regional location.

Capturing the essence and spirit of Byron Bay, the project marks Plus Architecture’s inaugural venture into the town, and forms part of the practice’s rapidly expanding hotel and accommodation portfolio across Australia.

Envisioned for a site in the the heart of Byron Bay, the reimagined double titled site will be transformed into an ultra-luxurious sanctuary, offering guests an unparalleled retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Spanning four meticulously curated levels and 1,410 sqm, designs for the 76-key hotel have drawn inspiration from Byron Bay's renowned "barefoot luxury" lifestyle. The hotel's sophisticated architectural design embraces and advances the established coastal vernacular, while introducing contemporary elements that elevate the guest experience to new heights.

Nestled behind Bryon Beach on the iconic Lawson Street, the hotel’s strategic location means guests can both immerse themselves in the town’s vibrant energy and enjoy a sense of exclusivity and privacy when desired.

Close by are popular shopping and dining districts like Jonson Street, as well as natural landmarks including Main Beach, Clarkes Beach, Wategos Beach, and Cape Byron.

With meticulous attention to detail, the materiality and finishes of the hotel were carefully selected to reflect the coastal environment's natural hues and colours. Travertine, brass, and bronze have been thoughtfully incorporated to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that resonates with the unique charm of the region.

Plus Architecture Director Danny Juric describes the design as a “symphony of serenity,” where materials and finishes harmoniously blend, embodying the gentle embrace of nature.

“Inspired by the captivating elements of the nearby beach and ocean, our colour palette gracefully reflects the warmth of sand and the vibrant allure of aqua hues,” Juric says. “Through a careful integration of base colours, sand tones, and shades of blue, we have artfully woven the coolness, warmth and texture of the beach into the very essence of the hotel's understated grandeur, creating an oasis-like interior and remarkably sensitive architecture.”

The internal space of the hotel has been thoughtfully designed to provide guests with an oasis amidst the bustling town. A large, light-filled atrium at the heart of the building creates a cool and calming environment, offering a retreat from the intensity of the outside world. This internal sanctum, which will feature a high-end restaurant, allows guests to reconnect with friends and enjoy their time together in a unique and curated setting.

While respecting the height limits of the area with a four-story structure, the hotel's rooftop area stands out as its crowning glory. Boasting the largest rooftop bar, pool, and cabana in Byron Bay, it seeks to meet the town’s increasing demand for luxurious hospitality destinations. Providing uninterrupted and breathtaking views of the beach and town, the rooftop becomes a backdrop for unique memories to be made, encapsulating the free-spirited and inclusive nature that defines Byron Bay.

Byron Bay Hotel is the latest hotel development design by Plus Architecture, with projects also underway in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast – showcasing the practice’s commitment to industry-leading, world-class design.
