Queer Family Launches Young Queerios Hangs to Foster Inclusive Community for LGBTQIA+ Youth

Local not-for-profit Queer Family is excited to announce that their Young Queerios Hangs are launching in May.

Queer Family is a community-based, peer-led organisation in Mullumbimby. They work to reduce social isolation and improve mental wellbeing through the creation of safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ people and allies to connect and build community.

Thanks to recent government funding to support young people, Queer Family is working to bring young LGBTQIA+ people together and to create spaces and events that are accessible to all. Young Queerios Hangs are a safe space to connect, have fun and build community in an affirming environment. Expect art, games, snacks, chats, and good vibes. These are free events for ages 12-24 - queer, questioning, friends, and allies.

Regional Queer youth are vulnerable to isolation and disconnection from community; LGBTIQA+ Health Australia (2021) reports that 63.8% of Queer Youth (14-21) have been diagnosed with a mental health condition – double that of their cishet counterparts.

Connecting kids and letting them form their own community gives them opportunities to be open, playful, and joyful. Watching these kids, often shy and reserved, laugh and bond is magical.

There will be four fortnightly sessions in both Ballina and Mullumbimby. Thanks to the NSW Government and the Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative for funding these events.
