Scotts Head Serenity: A Coastal Secret Worth Sharing

By Jessica Humphries

My host at Drifwood Villa explains that Scotts Head is like ‘Byron Bay seventy years ago.’ Approximately 45 minutes later I’m planning my retirement to this quaint beach town that I couldn’t have described more perfectly myself.

You see: Scotts Head is a little beach town – one that you’d expect to come with small town vibes and bad coffee (I can say that because I grew up in one of those towns). But there’s something kind of forward thinking about this place.

There’s a subtle hippie vibe at the local supermarket – the raw vegan treats and boutique foodie products weren’t lost on me. In the cute outdoor complex surrounding there are a few small shops, a massage parlour and a couple of cafes (the coffee is good!) with posters advertising the local yoga and meditation classes. The locals are genuinely friendly (you won’t pass anyone without a big smile and a greeting), and the kids learn Indonesian all the way through primary school: rarities that add to the uniqueness of this pocket of paradise.

Drifwood Villa deserves a big mention, as it’s hands-down the best place to stay in town – especially for the yogis and meditators. Just a sixty second stroll from the beach, the Airbnb offers three self-contained spaces nestled amongst zen-inspired gardens that will impress even the most experienced landscape gardener (I know because I took my partner and he was seriously impressed!). We stayed in the Zen Garden Suite that overlooked the Japanese landscape where we could take advantage of meditation nooks and enjoy the walking meditation track through the backyard. The back balcony was the perfect place for my morning yoga practice with the sun sinking into my skin as I blissed out on the serious serenity of the space. The hosts are long time yogis themselves and the kind of people you aspire to be when you ‘grow up.’ The best thing is that the luxury is totally affordable, with rooms starting at just $170 in the low season. Truly, it doesn’t get much better than this.
