A Film Retrospective: Award-winner Richard Mordaunt

The Byron Theatre proudly presents an exclusive retrospective of films by renowned Byron filmmaker Richard Mordaunt, whose groundbreaking works explore community activism, art and civil rights. This special event offers a rare opportunity to experience his critically acclaimed films, introduced by the filmmaker himself and followed by insightful Q&A sessions.

A pioneer in documentary filmmaking, Mordaunt studied at the London Film School in 1964, drawing inspiration from the French New Wave before founding Lusia Films in London. Using the first silent Éclair camera in the UK, he created films that resonate globally, capturing humanity’s resilience, creativity and pursuit of justice, leaving an indelible mark on cinema.

Audiences will gain unique insights into his creative process, experiences and the powerful stories behind his iconic works.

The two-day event features two sessions, one on Friday 25th April, and one on Saturday 26th April, each session will screen two films with an interval in between.

Both the Friday and Saturday sessions feature a Q&A with Richard.

Battle for Byron

Co-directed with David Bradbury, this compelling documentary chronicles the Byron Shire community’s tireless fight to protect their natural environment and cultural identity from overdevelopment, including the notorious Club Med proposal. An inspiring tale of grassroots activism and the power of a united community. (Rated G, 60 mins)

Salvatore Zofrea: Master of Light

Discover the life and work of Salvatore Zofrea, one of Australia’s most celebrated painters. This evocative documentary captures Zofrea’s journey from his childhood in Italy to his artistic achievements in Australia, culminating in the creation of his monumental masterpiece, Morning Light. (Rated G, 60 mins)

Saturday 26 April - 1pm

Otis Redding and the Battle for Civil Rights

This powerful documentary, featuring Otis Redding’s final UK performance in 1967, interweaves his music with the story of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The film, recently re-edited in 2023, offers a poignant reflection into an era of struggle and change. (Rated G, 60 mins)

Brushes with Fame

A captivating exploration of the Archibald Prize, Australia’s most prestigious portraiture competition. Featuring nine celebrated artists, this beautifully filmed documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of their creative process and the cultural significance of the prize. (Rated G, 60 mins)
