Community Event in Byron Bay to Raise Awareness and Understanding
An open conversation to break stigma, share insights and support a dementia-friendly community.
Dementia is one of the biggest health challenges of our time, yet it remains widely misunderstood. Let’s Talk Dementia, a community event at the Byron Community Centre, aims to change that by opening up important conversations, providing practical insights and fostering a more dementia-friendly community.
Presented by Byron Seniors Club and Byron Shire Respite Service, the event will take place on Thursday 10 April, 2025, bringing together leading experts in dementia care and brain health to discuss the realities of dementia, share personal stories and offer guidance to those affected by the condition.
Speakers Include:
● Dr Rachel Jones – Geriatrician, Ballina Hospital
● Christine Aggar – Associate Professor, Faculty of Health, Southern Cross
University
● Kathleen Cator – Clinical Psychologist, Byron Bay
With dementia now impacting more than 400,000 Australians, events like these are crucial in breaking down stigma and providing tools for individuals, families and carers to navigate the condition.
“Dementia touches so many lives, yet there’s still a lot of fear and misinformation around it,” said Sabine Muschter, Let’s Talk event organiser. “This event is about giving people the knowledge and confidence to navigate a dementia diagnosis, whether for themselves, a loved one or within the community.”
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of dementia, practical strategies for care and support, and information on lifestyle changes that can help protect brain health. Whether you are living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or simply want to learn more, this event offers a welcoming space for conversation and connection.
