What's On: Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is reaching new heights as it tours Australia in 2022.

The world's most prestigious mountain film festival is coming back to Byron Bay: the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour presents over 2 1/2 hours of the most enthralling mountain adventure films that will have you on the edge of your seat.

This 20 - 21 May, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will travel to the Byron Theatre on its annual pilgrimage, travelling Australia to bring to theatres and cinemas a night of short stories that prove life is what you make it.

Showcasing a carefully curated selection of the best films from Canada’s famous nine-day international festival, the event will travel to 30 Australian towns and cities, inspiring audiences in 70 packed screenings.  From approximately 400 films entered into the annual festival, award-winning films and audience favourites are among the films chosen to travel the globe.

Summit the peaks of Nepal, witness a world first crossing of the North Pole in Winter, ski steep slopes, ride breath-taking trails at breakneck speed and get some serious airtime; the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour stories are chosen to celebrate more than outdoor exploration. They also celebrate the character-building that adventure inevitably sparks: inner explorations of human bonds, trust, and how we value one another and our world.

Featuring 9 unique and captivating films from adventurers around the globe, the 2022 World Tour is an exhilarating and provocative exploration of the adventure world. Give your adventure dreams more oxygen this year, with a ticket to the 2022 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

Not surprisingly, not everything goes as planned.

FILM 5: THE MYSTERY

FILM 6: GIRLS GOTTA EAT DIRT

The story of three best friends, roommates, and riding partners with a taste for the finer things. Namely plenty of dirt on their jorts and lighthearted, fun mountain bike action in the high alpine.

FILM 7: FOLLOW THE LIGHT

Boasting narrow canyons, dramatic sunsets and illuminated hot air balloons, the unique landforms of Cappadocia in Turkey are the dream setting for a mountain biking spectacular. With mesmerising cinematography and phenomenal riding, immerse yourself in this colourful adventure with top riders Kilian Bron, Pierre Henni, Pierre Dupont and JB Liautard.

FILM 8: THE FARMER

The Farmer spends his winters harvesting one of the most precious crops on earth: Powder. A local legend in the Wasatch Mountains, this film explores how his passion for efficiency and sustainability were utilised to maximise a lifetime of skiing.

FILM 9: A DOG’S TALE

A celebration of the joy of mountain biking, as seen through the eyes of our four-legged friends. Join pups of all sizes as they take on gnarly jumps, sweeping corners and berms… with a belly rub at the end. These feisty and loveable trail dogs enjoy being in the outdoors as much as us humans – and often outclass their pro-rider owners.
